Workshops and Seminars

In order to provide additional opportunities for students and rated members to improve their skills, ASI offers workshops in two vital skills: docking and capsize recovery. These workshops take place at Kent Lake, at the East Boat Launch of Kensington Metro Park. In addition the Racers provide a Spinnaker Demo at Kent Lake. Watch our weekly newsletter, the Burgee, for dates.

Level 1 Maintenance Workshop
Level 1 Maintenance Workshop
is offered at Kent Lake at Kensington Metropark on the 1st and 3rd Saturday mornings, all summer, from 9 AM to 1 PM. Level 1 Maintenance at Stony Creek Lake at Stony Creek Metropark is scheduled one Saturday per month or on an as needed basis. This class must be completed before final L1 written test is taken. Our e-zine, the Burgee, and members calendar has class details. Students receive the Burgee free upon membership.
Level 1 Capsize Recovery Workshop
is offered at Kent Lake at Kensington Metropark.

Level 1 Docking Workshop
Level 1 Docking Workshop is offered at Kent Lake at Kensington Metropark.
Dock Master Workshops
All members, including students, can be a Dockmaster. This is a great way to earn volunteer hours, help your sail mates, and learn about docking by watching situations others get in and out of. We have added a Dockmaster lesson to the shore classes and the docking workshop. You may also ask to shadow an experienced Dockmaster.
We need Dock Masters at all club events and mostly at class times or practice sails.
In our dock box, you will find instructions, emergency numbers, a badge to wear, a sign-in sheet, and a boat hook.

Racing Seminar
For new racers and sailors who wish to hone their skills, Racing is offered at a lower cost the first time you participate in the Racing Program. Returning racers pay a small fee (see fees schedule) each season.
The racing seminar is held once each year at the start of the season. Watch the Burgee for current information and Zoom dates or contact the racing manager.
The on shore seminar is required for new racers and is a recommended refresher for returning ones, providing basic racing background for a subsequent series of racing practice sails on the water.
The seminar will cover a basic orientation to one-design racing on ASI Interlakes. Right-of-way rules when two or more sailboats meet are explained, as well as some easy ways to remember the rules. Also, tactics at the starting line and around the course are illustrated.
The seminar takes the novice racers through the legs of the race: windward leg with it’s tacking, the reaching leg with a jibe, and the running leg down to the leeward mark. Safety, balance, and enjoyment are emphasized.
All rated sailors are welcome to come and find out what racing is about. If you’re thinking of racing this, be sure to come. We don’t accept new novice racers who haven’t attended the seminar at least once.

Spinnaker Workshop
Our Racing Team puts on this workshop. You get a hands-on lesson in how to rig and sail with a Spinnaker. This workshop is held at the Kent Lake East Boat Launch. See the Burgee and Race schedule for details and dates

Please fill in the form and the ASI Sail Secretary will contact you with more information about the registration and payment details.

Sail with us at Stony Creek Lake at Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Twp. MI or at Kent Lake at Kensington Metropark in Milford, Michigan.
Tests (written and water)
You can take the Level 1 tests when you feel ready.
Unlimited use of Interlake boats
After qualifying, you can take the L1 boats out as the skipper as often as you like, consistent with some common-sense rules, of course. For example, ASI does not allow single-handed sailing. You’ll learn more about this in the classes.
Becoming a Rated Sailor
Unrated members have two years to get the Level 1 rating but getting the Level 1 rating can be easily accomplished after your classes in the same year. The program was designed that way. If for any reason you are unable to complete your rating in two years, just sign up for the class again. If you believe you have a situation that needs review, we offer a process for that thru our Operations Team, just let us know.
